OUR Story
Happy Baby Basics is dedicated to providing diapers and diapering supplies to families of infants and toddlers in Gogebic County.
April Bekkala, the founder of Happy Baby Basics, began this organization in 2020. As a mother of two she understands the hefty cost of diapering supplies and realizes how purchasing these basic necessities can adversely effect some families.
Diaper need is very real. Diapers are expensive, averaging around $100 a month for only one child. Often parents are forced to make hard decisions with limited resources - sometimes having to decide whether to buy groceries, pay bills or purchase diapers.
After learning that Federal assistance programs, such as SNAP (formerly called food stamps) and WIC, do not cover purchasing diapers she knew there had to be some way to help families in need. Doing some research she realized that Gogebic County had no diaper bank, but high rates of poverty, so she decided to take action and formed Happy Baby Basics to help keep babies and toddlers clean, dry and healthy.
Happy Baby Basics does not distribute diapers directly to individuals. Diapers are provided to our partner agency who work with families who struggle to afford a clean, reliable supply of diapers each month. Our diapering supplies come from donations, diaper drives and donated funds.
